Hyperpigmentation refers to discoloration of the skin that can happen for a number of reasons, including brown spots (lentigines and freckles) that occur due to sun exposure, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation from the effects of acne and rosacea, and melasma from hormonal conditions. Whatever the reason, these patches create an uneven skin tone and can be unsightly in appearance. Fortunately, at Behr Laser & Skin Care Center, we have a number of effective ways of treating these conditions.
REQUEST APPOINTMENTHow Does Hyperpigmentation Happen?
Typically, hyperpigmentation means your body overproduces pigment, or melanin, in a certain area. The melanin pools and spots or patches appear that are darker than the surrounding skin. Sun damage or ultraviolet light is the biggest contributing factor.
How Can Hyperpigmentation Be Treated?
Treating hyperpigmentation typically means targeting the areas of skin where the excess melanin has pooled, allowing healthier, more even-toned skin to replace it. There are many effective ways to remove damaged and discolored skin without surgery. Not all methods can completely remove hyperpigmentation in all cases, but most of the time, we can significantly reduce the contrast, giving you a much more even overall skin tone.
