A proper cancer treatment starts with a precise diagnosis. When it comes to cancer of the skin specifically, the disease is broken down into three categories: basal-cell, squamous-cell, and melanoma. Having a thorough knowledge of specific cancer types is essential to providing you with the best skin cancer treatment. With over 15 years of addressing the dermatological needs of the Fresno community, Dr. Behr is your number one provider of skin cancer services. At Behr Laser & Skin Care Center, we provide Mohs surgery and cancer excision services to help ensure your long-term health and happiness.

A thorough evaluation and an accurate skin cancer diagnosis are the essential first steps in treating your skin early. When you arrive at our Fresno center, Dr. Behr will begin the screening process by first conducting a physical examination along with a routine blood draw. If any signs of cancer are detected, she can offer her excision and Mohs services if applicable. Both operations are performed in-office and are done with expert precision to ensure the best results.
Mohs Surgery vs Excision Treatments
Mohs surgery, also known as microscopically controlled surgery, was developed by Dr. F. Mohs in the 1940s. It is a common procedure used to treat certain skin cancers and has a 99% success rate for the removal of basal and squamous cell carcinomas. This surgery is available for the removal of cancerous lesions on certain parts of the body. Surgical excisions, by contrast, are more invasive and more applicable for the treatment of malignant melanomas. Excisions can be effective in addressing other cancers in areas where Mohs is not appropriate.
What to Expect During Your Visit
During the cancer screening process, Dr. Behr will check the skin for moles, birthmarks, or other growths that are unusual in color, size, shape, or texture. This evaluation typically takes minutes to perform but can reveal quite a lot. If an abnormal mole or other growth is discovered, you may be asked to make a follow-up appointment for additional testing such as a biopsy. Whether a Mohs procedure or a standard excision is performed, you can rest assured knowing that your operation is in capable hands. The duration of your procedure will depend on the area of treatment, but both operations are done under anesthetic and cause minimal discomfort.
Results of Skin Cancer Treatment
In the case of excision, post-op skin care instructions will be provided for you. We typically apply a pressure dressing after the operation which should be left in place for 24 hours. During this time ice can be applied over the dressing every couple of hours for 15-20 minutes. Care should be taken to avoid lifting anything over 15-20 pounds. After the pressure bandage is removed the wound is cleaned with saline and an antibiotic ointment and a bandage is reapplied. Sutures are left in for 7-14 days. When it comes to Mohs, recovery depends on the size of the skin cancer. While some wounds can heal by themselves, others may require sutures, a small skin graft, or in some cases, reconstructive surgery. If you feel any discomfort after the procedure, you may take Tylenol. While minimal bleeding is common, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience persistent, excessive bleeding.
